I’m a sucker for anything Thomas Hardy. I cannot help it, he’s really good and A Pair of Blue Eyes is pretty much a masterpiece. Here is a very capricious girl who end up playing with the feelings of every guy who crosses her path. She’s more than ready to change alliances every time she meets a hunk. Funny enough every one of the four guys she meets is in a better social position that the previous one until she finally becomes a lady. No matter how hard I tried I couldn’t sympathize with her or with the main male characters, Stephen and Henry. The first was clueless and the second such a saint that was unbearable. Don’t get me wrong, this novel is a page turner and so well developed and well written that to me is Hardy’s best work. The fact that the characters are so flawed adds to its greatness. I only expect that I may be able to write a ‘magnum opus’ close to it.
